Final
Camping Ground:
Civil War Veterans at Brooklyn's
Green-Wood Cemetery,
In Their Own Words
By
Jeffrey I. Richman
With an illustrated biographical dictionary on CD
In
September, 2002, Brooklyns Green-Wood Cemetery launched
its unprecedented Civil War Project. In the ensuing years,
hundreds of volunteers, led by cemetery historian Jeff Richman,
have worked to identify Civil War veterans who are interred
there. Searches of the grounds, newspapers, muster rolls,
pension records, and other sources, and information from
descendants and researchers, have resulted in the identification
of an amazing 3000 Civil War veterans at Green-Wood! More
than 1200 gravestones, obtained from the Veterans Administration,
are now on display at the cemetery entrance and will soon
be installed at the appropriate burial places to mark formerly
unmarked graves there.
But Green-Woods Civil War Project is far from done--many
Civil War veterans have yet to be found. Please contact
the cemetery historian, Jeff Richman, at grnwdtours@aol.com
if you know of a Civil War veteran who is interred at Green-Wood
Cemetery in Brooklyn.
The book, Final Camping Ground: The Civil War Veterans at
Brooklyns Green-Wood Cemetery, in Their Own Words,
is a large part of Green-Woods Civil War Project.
Just published, it was written and edited by Jeffrey I.
Richman. This unforgettable book is a profusely illustrated
account of the Civil War (many of the illustrations are
by men who are also permanent residents of Green-Wood),
primarily in the words of Green-Wood Cemeterys veteranstheir
letters, their journals, and their battlefield reports.
The book is supplemented by a searchable cd containing a
biographical dictionary of 3000 veterans, with more than
700 pages of text and hundreds of photographic portraits.
Here
are the veterans of the Civil War in their own words, many
of which are published for the first time. They write from
camp, just trying to survive. They write from the front,
awaiting battle. And, they write from the battlefield, where
they lie dying. Their words reflect their patriotism, their
humor, their dedication.
These
men sacrificed so much for their countrytheir careers,
their health, their lives. They deserve to be remembered.
Here they are, in their own words.
